Exploring Forklift Attachments: Push Pull and Carpet Boom

Forklift attachments play a crucial role in enhancing the versatility of these material-handling machines. Two notable attachments are the Push Pull and Carpet Boom, each designed for specific applications.

Push Pull Attachments:

  • Application: Primarily used for handling loads on cardboard or plastic slip sheets.
  • Functionality: Eliminates the need for pallets; loads with slip sheets are pushed off or pulled onto the forks.
  • Benefits: Reduces costs and frees up space within a facility, especially popular in food-processing warehouses.
  • Challenges: Requires precise forklift operation, approaching the slip sheet square on to avoid tearing. Handling at the destination may require additional slip sheet attachments or the transfer to an empty pallet.
  • Load Centre Impact: Substantial de-rating of the forklift occurs as the load centre is extended to accommodate the attachment mechanism.

Carpet Boom Attachment:

  • Application: Specifically designed for handling carpets.
  • Construction: Typically made of a steel bar around 100 mm in diameter and up to 4 m in length.
  • Operator Skill: Requires skill from the forklift operator to handle carpets without causing damage.
  • Challenges: Substantially de-rates the forklift truck due to the extended load center when handling longer carpets.
  • Design Considerations: Engineers work backward, determining the needed truck capacity based on the heaviest and longest carpet to be handled.
  • Formula: Designers use a formula considering the load weight, load center, and load length to determine the required forklift capacity.

Key Considerations for Forklift Attachments:

  1. Operator Skill: Proper training and skill development are essential for safe and efficient operation.
  2. Load Center Impact: Understand the impact of attachments on the forklift’s load center and capacity.
  3. Application Suitability: Ensure that the chosen attachment suits the specific application and load type.
  4. Handling Challenges: Be aware of challenges associated with each attachment, such as precise maneuvering for push pull or careful handling for carpet booms.

While forklift attachments enhance functionality, their use requires careful consideration, skillful operation, and adherence to safety protocols to optimize their benefits.
