Side loader forklift training

Ideal for long loads such as timber and tubing in narrow aisle spaces.

With a similar slim structure to the reach forklift, side loaders are great for loading and unloading in narrow aisle spaces. They allow access to areas where a regular counterbalance could not fit, because the forks are located on the side of the vehicle rather than on the front. This also gives operators excellent visibility when loading and unloading from pallet racking.

Side loaders are available in both outdoor and indoor models and are used for moving longer materials such as timber or tubing. The limited overhang increases safety when handling long loads.

What the course covers

  • Pre-use inspection and daily checks
  • Handling long and awkward loads
  • Deck and fork operation
  • Narrow-aisle racking work
  • Travelling with side-mounted loads
  • Pedestrian and site safety

Who it suits

  • Timber yards and sawmills
  • Steel stockholders
  • Pipe and tube distributors
  • Long-load warehousing

Assessment and certification

Candidates complete a theory test, a practical pre-use inspection and an assessed practical driving test. Those who pass receive a certificate of basic training for the side loader truck type. We recommend refresher training every three to five years in line with HSE guidance.
