Most incidents come down to a handful of causes: untrained or out-of-practice operators, overloaded trucks, poor pedestrian segregation and skipped daily checks. Every one of them is preventable, and every one of them appears in the HSE prosecutions we report on.
Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) and the Approved Code of Practice L117, employers must make sure operators have received basic, specific job and familiarisation training before they drive a truck at work. A certificate of basic training is the evidence that inspectors and insurers ask for.

Ask a room of forklift operators whether they always wear the seat belt and watch the eyes drop. It is uncomfortable, it slows down getting on and off, and the truck only ever goes ten miles an hour.
There is no national speed limit for forklifts. The truck's top speed, often 12 to 15 mph for a counterbalance, is set by the manufacturer, and the safe speed in any workplace is set by the employer.
